Book Review: Only The Paranoid Survive
“Success breeds complacency. Complacency breeds failure. Only the paranoid survive”
Andy Grove ,former Intel CEO, shares his experiences about the strategic inflection point through which Intel re-positioned itself from memory chip to microprocessor producer successfully.
Grove descibes a strategic inflection point as a 10X change of 6 forces (Porter’s five forces + complementors). When a strategic inflection point hits, the ordinary rules of business go out the window. Yet, managed right, a strategic inflection point can be an opportunity to win in the marketplace and emerge stronger than ever.
Last parts of the book are related to career inflection points. I’ve liked his suggestion ” Your career is your business, you’re its CEO and just like the CEO of a large corporation, you must respond to market forces. It is your responsibility to protect your career from harm and to position yourself to benefit from changes in the operating environment.”
I strongly recommend this book, it provides sound strategic leadership advice.
